7-10 Years

Our dance classes for 7–10 year olds are designed to spark creativity, build confidence, and encourage a love for movement. At this age, dancers begin to develop more refined technique, coordination, and musicality—while still having a ton of fun! Whether your child is new to dance or continuing their journey, our experienced instructors create a supportive and energetic environment where every student can shine. It’s all about expression, teamwork, and joy through dance.

Registration is open for Season 8. Classes begin the week of August 18th. FMDC does accept enrollments throughout the season. We can’t wait to dance with you this season!

Class Descriptions

Ballet

Ballet 1 (7-8yrs or 9-11yrs): Ballet is the cornerstone of all dance, and this class is the perfect place for dancers to begin their journey. Students will learn the fundamental techniques of ballet, including proper foot articulation, arm placement, and posture, while developing strong muscle memory. Classes focus on building strength, flexibility, coordination, and grace in a fun, supportive environment. 

Dress Code: Dancers are required to wear a fully lined black leotard with no sports bra underneath. Skirts are not permitted. Pink tights and pink split-sole ballet shoes must be worn. Hair should be neatly pulled back into a bun, secured with a hairnet and bobby pins.

Year End Show: They will perform a ballet dance in the year end show.

Ballet 2 (8-10yrs): Building on the fundamentals, this class guides young dancers through increasingly complex ballet technique. Students continue to refine footwork, arm placement, posture, and alignment while developing greater strength, flexibility, and control. Emphasis is placed on musicality, coordination, and expressive movement in a supportive, focused environment—laying the groundwork for more advanced training. Class is twice a week. 

Dress Code: Dancers are required to wear a fully lined black leotard with no sports bra underneath. Skirts are not permitted. Pink tights and pink split-sole ballet shoes must be worn. Hair should be neatly pulled back into a bun, secured with a hairnet and bobby pins.

Tap

Tap 1 (7-10yrs): This fun and energetic class introduces young dancers to the foundations of tap dance and is perfect for beginners or those with limited experience. This class focuses on developing proper technique, and producing clear, crisp tap sounds. Dancers will explore rhythm, musicality, and timing through engaging exercises and choreography. The class structure is designed to help students break down and understand complex rhythmic patterns, while building confidence, discipline, and a love for tap.

Dress Code: Dancers should wear a black biketard, black leotard, black tank top, or black t-shirt paired with either black jazz shorts or black leggings, along with black tap shoes (Leos Ultra Tap black lace-up full sole tap shoes), and have their hair pulled back neatly and away from the face.

Year End Show: They will perform a tap dance in the year end show.

Tap 2 (8yrs+): This class is designed for dancers with a foundational knowledge of tap who are ready to build on their skills. Tap 2 continues to focus on developing proper tap technique and producing clean, articulate sounds, while introducing more intricate footwork and faster-paced combinations. Dancers will deepen their understanding of rhythm, timing, and musicality through challenging exercises and fun choreography. Emphasis is placed on clarity, speed, and accuracy, as well as developing the ability to pick up and retain choreography more quickly. This class nurtures confidence, coordination, and performance quality, while strengthening each dancer’s ability to express themselves through the language of rhythm.

Dress Code: Dancers should wear a black biketard, black leotard, black tank top, or black t-shirt paired with either black jazz shorts or black leggings, along with black tap shoes (Leos Ultra Tap black lace-up full sole tap shoes), and have their hair pulled back neatly and away from the face.

Year End Show: They will perform a tap dance in the year end show.

Ballroom

Ballroom (7-8yrs or 9yrs+): Get ready to hit the dance floor with style and energy! This dynamic ballroom class teaches you the essential steps, sharp posture, and infectious rhythm of crowd-favorite dances like the lively Cha-Cha. Perfect for anyone looking to have a blast while building confidence and mastering moves that will make you the star in the studio and on stage!

Enrollment in a Ballet or Jazz class is a prerequisite for participation in our Acro program.

Dress Code: Dancers should wear a black biketard, leotard, or tank top paired with black shorts or leggings. Add a ballroom skirt for extra fun (any color allowed). Ballroom Shoes (Very Fine, Copper Satin) are required with heel height between 1.25 in to 1.5 ins. Younger dancers are recommended to have 1.25 in heel height. Have their hair pulled back neatly out of their face.

Year End Show: They will perform a ballroom dance in the year end show.

Jazz

Jazz 1  (7-8yrs or 9-11yrs): This high-energy class introduces dancers to the fundamentals of jazz technique in a fun and supportive environment. Students will learn key elements such as body isolations, turns, leaps, and expressive performance skills. Dancers will explore isolations, across-the-floor progressions, and dynamic jazz combinations set to age-appropriate, upbeat music. Jazz 1 builds confidence, musicality, and stage presence while laying a strong technical foundation for future dance training. 

Dress Code: Dancers should wear a black biketard, leotard, tank top, or t-shirt paired with black jazz shorts or leggings, along with black jazz shoes, and have their hair pulled back neatly out of their face.

Year End Show: They will perform a jazz dance in the year end show.

Jazz 1.5 (7-10yrs): Jazz 1.5 is an energetic and engaging class designed for dancers who have some basic jazz experience and are ready to build on their foundation. This class focuses on developing technique through body isolations, turns, leaps, and stylized movement, while also encouraging greater musicality and performance quality. Jazz 1.5 helps dancers grow in confidence, coordination, and stage presence as they prepare for more advanced levels.

Dress Code: Dancers should wear a black biketard, leotard, tank top, or t-shirt paired with black jazz shorts or leggings, along with black jazz shoes, and have their hair pulled back neatly out of their face.

Year End Show: They will perform a jazz dance in the year end show.

Jazz 2 (8-10yrs): Jazz 2 is a fast-paced, technically focused class designed for dedicated dancers with a solid foundation in jazz. This advanced level challenges students to refine their technique through complex turns, dynamic leaps, precise isolations, and stylized choreography. Emphasis is placed on strength, flexibility, control, and performance quality, with combinations that require strong musicality, focus, and expression. Dancers will engage in rigorous warm-ups, intricate across-the-floor progressions, and choreography that pushes their artistry and athleticism. Jazz 2 is ideal for committed students looking to deepen their training and prepare for competitive, or performance-focused opportunities.

Dress Code: Dancers should wear a black biketard, leotard, tank top, or t-shirt paired with black jazz shorts or leggings, along with black jazz shoes, and have their hair pulled back neatly out of their face.

Year End Show: They will perform a jazz dance in the year end show.

Hip Hop

Hip Hop 1 (7-8yrs or 9-11yrs): Get ready to move in this high-energy class designed to build confidence, rhythm, and coordination! Hip Hop 1 encourages dancers to express themselves through their own unique style while learning the foundations of hip hop movement. Dancers will explore key elements of the genre—including grooves and more—all set to fun, age-appropriate music. This dynamic class is perfect for students ready to develop their skills and let their personality shine on the dance floor!

Dress Code: For Hip Hop class, wear comfortable athletic clothes that allow you to move and stretch freely—no jeans, please—and sneakers that are only worn in class; any brand…stylish and fun! Please have their hair pulled back neatly out of their face.

Year End Show: They will perform a hip hop dance in the year end show.

Hip Hop 2 (7-10yrs): This upbeat and energetic class builds on the basics of hip hop while introducing more complex moves and combinations. Dancers will continue developing their confidence, coordination, and musicality through multiple styles of Hip Hop. With a focus on self-expression and creativity, students will be challenged in a supportive and fun environment—while exploring choreography that helps them grow both as dancers and performers.

Dress Code: For Hip Hop class, wear comfortable athletic clothes that allow you to move and stretch freely—no jeans, please—and sneakers that are only worn in class; any brand…stylish and fun! Please have their hair pulled back neatly out of their face.

Year End Show: They will perform a hip hop dance in the year end show.

Contemporary

Contemporary 1 (7-10yrs): Contemporary dance blends the foundations of ballet, the expressive freedom of modern, and the dynamic energy of jazz to create a powerful and versatile movement style. In this introductory class, dancers will explore innovative ways of moving through thoughtfully designed combinations that encourage creativity and personal expression. The class also integrates various improvisational techniques, helping students build confidence, deepen body awareness, and develop their unique artistic voice. Ideal for dancers looking to expand their movement vocabulary and embrace the artistry of contemporary dance.

Dress Code: Dancers should wear a black biketard, leotard, tank top, or t-shirt paired with black jazz shorts or leggings. No shoes required, just barefeet. Have their hair pulled back neatly out of their face. Please note a sports bra is required if wearing a t-shirt or tank top, as dancers will be going upside down, and we wait to ensure all dancers feel comfortable in class.

Year End Show: They will perform a contemporary dance in the year end show.

Contemporary 2 (8-10yrs): Building on the foundational elements introduced in Contemporary 1, this intermediate-level class deepens the exploration of contemporary dance through more complex combinations, increased physicality, and expanded use of space. Dancers will refine their technique while continuing to blend elements of ballet, jazz, and modern dance. Improvisation remains a key component, now with a focus on intention, musicality, and storytelling. Contemporary 2 challenges dancers to take greater artistic risks, develop emotional connection, and grow as expressive, confident performers.

Dress Code: Dancers should wear a black biketard, leotard, tank top, or t-shirt paired with black jazz shorts or leggings. No shoes required, just barefeet. Have their hair pulled back neatly out of their face. Please note a sports bra is required if wearing a t-shirt or tank top, as dancers will be going upside down, and we wait to ensure all dancers feel comfortable in class.

Year End Show: They will perform a contemporary dance in the year end show.

Musical Theatre

Musical Theatre 1 (7-10yrs): Get ready to shine in the spotlight! Musical Theatre is the ultimate class for stars with big Broadway dreams. Bursting with energy, fun, and imagination, this class dives into the dazzling world of musical theatre. Students will learn choreography inspired by Broadway’s biggest hits, build confidence for the stage, and discover the magic of storytelling through movement. It’s the perfect stepping stone for future performers and a fantastic way to get audition-ready—all while having a blast!

Dress Code: Dancers should wear a black biketard, leotard, tank top, or t-shirt paired with black jazz shorts or leggings, along with black jazz shoes, and have their hair pulled back neatly out of their face.

Year End Show: They will perform a musical theatre dance in the year end show.

Acro

Acro A, B, & C (7-10yrs): Prepare to elevate your movement with Acro—a dynamic fusion of dance and acrobatics that challenges both your strength and grace. Unlike gymnastics, Acro is performed on a hard stage without the aid of a sprung floor, requiring dancers to seamlessly integrate musicality, emotional expression, extension, and lines with acrobatic skills. You’ll develop greater flexibility, core strength, and body awareness, all while enjoying a supportive environment energized by music and camaraderie.

Acro A= Level 1 or 2

Acro B= Level 2 or 3

Acro C= Level 4 or 5

Acro D= Level 5 or 6

Enrollment in a Ballet or Jazz class is a prerequisite for participation in our Acro program.

We adhere to their comprehensive syllabus, which emphasizes safe and effective progressions in five key areas: flexibility, strength, balance, limbering, and tumbling. As part of our commitment to excellence, we offer annual Acrobatic Arts examinations. These exams provide dancers with the opportunity to achieve defined goals and receive constructive feedback from certified examiners, fostering motivation and continuous improvement.
